The placement and size of your cooker

The placement and size of your cooker are crucial factors when designing your kitchen. Whether you opt for a compact model or a larger range cooker, ensuring the correct placement is essential for both functionality and safety. The size of your cooker will also determine how well it fits within your kitchen space and meets your cooking needs.

When choosing and positioning your cooker, it's important to consider both the layout of your kitchen and the size of the cooker. At Myrangecooker.co.uk, we offer models ranging from 60 cm to 150 cm in width, so you can find the perfect solution whether you have a smaller kitchen or want a larger cooker for high-level cooking.

Important to remember

This is a general guide to range cooker installation. To ensure safe and long-lasting use, installation should always be carried out by a qualified electrician or gas engineer in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. If you have any questions or would like to purchase a new cooker, contact us at Myrangecooker.co.uk. We can provide advice, help you choose the right model, and offer practical tips before installation.

Electric cooker installation

Almost all our cookers are supplied without a power cable. How your cooker should be connected depends on the model and the setup of your home. Some range cookers require a single-phase or three-phase connection, while others may need a fixed installation. The connection type is determined by the specific electrical requirements of the cooker model and the available electrical supply in your home. For safety and proper function, it’s important to ensure your cooker is connected according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Full details of the required connections for your cooker will always be included in the product manual. If you’re unsure or need more information, our customer service team is always available to assist you.

Cookers with fixed installation

A cooker that requires a fixed installation must be fitted by a certified electrician registered with the relevant safety authority. In most homes, a 16A single-phase connection is standard for smaller cookers. For larger cookers, particularly induction models, a 20A circuit is often recommended to ensure that all ovens and heating zones can be used simultaneously. However, in practice, it is rare that you would need to use multiple induction zones and ovens at the same time. For gas cookers with electric ovens, the electrical requirements are typically lower, making installation simpler compared to larger induction or electric cookers.

Depending on the model, your range cooker may either plug into a standard socket or need to be hardwired. Smaller, freestanding cookers typically use a plug, while induction cookers and high-powered models almost always require a fixed installation by a certified electrician. Always refer to the product’s technical specifications to understand the specific requirements for your cooker.

Gas cooker installation

When ordering a gas cooker, it's important to specify which type of gas you will be using. Different gases require different burner jets. Our gas cookers are supplied with jets for natural gas and LPG/propane, and some models are also approved for town gas. Information relating to what type of gas the cooker is approved for is available in the information relating to each product.

The gas connection is typically made at the back of the cooker with an approved hose and clip (not supplied). Installation must always be carried out by a certified gas engineer to ensure the warranty remains valid.

Installation of natural gas

The natural gas grid in the UK requires a connection of 20 mBar (G20). If you already have gas cooker a gas cooker in your home that is connected to natural gas mains, it will be simple to replace the stove. However, if you want to install a new connection to the natural gas network, the cost will depend on how close to the network you live. Alternatively, an LPG (propane) powered stove may be an option for those who live too far away from the gas grid. Brands whose range cookers are approved for use with natural gas: Pazzano and Lofra.

Installation of LPG (propane)

LPG is an excellent alternative for those who wish to enjoy the benefits of a gas cooker but do not have access to the mains gas supply. Instead, you can connect your gas cooker to an LPG/propane cylinder. While you will need to replace the cylinder occasionally, a gas bottle typically lasts quite a while before needing replacement. Many people choose to keep two cylinders at home – one in use and one as a reserve. A cooker that uses LPG requires the gas burner jets to be designed for 30 mBar (G30). Please inform us when ordering, and we will install the correct burner jets before delivery. If not, the cooker can be modified later to accommodate this.

There are specific regulations regarding the storage of gas cylinders and their size. Gas bottles should always be stored in a well-ventilated area. If you choose to store your cylinder in a kitchen cabinet, it must be ventilated both at the top and bottom. Many people prefer to store their cylinders outside the house in a sheltered area with a hose leading inside to connect to the cooker.

To ensure that all regulations are followed and your warranty remains valid, we recommend consulting a certified gas installer. Brands whose range cookers are approved for use with LPG (propane): Pazzano and Lofra.

Having a gas range cooker in your home requires more attention to fire safety compared to an electric range cooker. However, it’s important to note that modern gas cookers are much safer than older models. They feature safety catches on the knobs, which prevent them from being accidentally turned on, reducing the risk of gas leaks. The knobs are connected to an ignition system that automatically cuts off the gas supply if the flame goes out. Since 2010, it has been a legal requirement for all cookers to be fitted with a flame failure device (FFD) as standard, so you can be assured that all the cookers we sell meet this safety standard.

In the event of a power outage, the burners can still be used with manual ignition. That said, it’s always important to exercise caution when using gas appliances!

The right cooker and oven can protect your kitchen

When you open the oven door, both heat and moisture are released, which can gradually damage the cabinetry around the cooker. To prevent issues like swelling materials, discolouration, or other moisture-related damage, some of our premium cookers from Lofra, feature a built-in protective panel. This panel is positioned at the opening of the oven door and directs heat away, offering extra protection for your kitchen.
